
The claim is everywhere. Even mild dehydration impairs your focus, memory, and mood. Your brain is 73 percent water. Drink up or think worse.
It's repeated with total confidence by wellness brands, productivity blogs, and quite a few articles that ought to know better. The actual research is considerably less tidy, and the messiness is more interesting than the headline.
Where the confidence comes from
There is real evidence behind the general idea. Severe dehydration clearly affects cognition. That's not controversial and never has been. Confusion and neurological symptoms accompany serious fluid loss, which is why it's a medical concern in children with fever and in frail elderly patients.
The interesting question is mild dehydration, usually defined as losing 2 percent or less of body mass in water. That's the everyday version, the one that applies to someone who forgot to drink much during a busy afternoon. And that question only started getting serious attention in the last decade or so.
Several studies found effects. Ganio and colleagues reported that mild dehydration without overheating impaired vigilance and working memory, and increased anxiety and fatigue, in a study of 26 men. Armstrong and colleagues found that dehydration from moderate exercise increased participants' perception of how difficult a task was and worsened mood across 25 women. Fadda and colleagues, working with schoolchildren in a hot climate, found negative effects on short-term memory from dehydration and benefits from water supplementation.
That's a real body of work, and it's where the popular claim comes from.
Where it falls apart
Other studies looked for the same effects and didn't find them.
Wittbrodt and colleagues found that mild dehydration following exercise in heat produced physiological strain, but no adverse effect on cognitive performance in 12 recreational athletes. A randomized trial by Trinies and colleagues among primary school pupils in Zambia found that hydration level didn't affect cognitive performance at all. Several other studies using heat stress or exercise to induce dehydration found no cognitive impairment.
A review in ScienceDirect examining the literature concluded that methodological heterogeneity across these studies is severe enough that the relationship between mild dehydration and cognitive performance cannot be supported. That's a strong statement, and it's not from a fringe source.
The problem is that the studies aren't measuring the same thing. Some induce dehydration through heat, some through exercise, some through water restriction, some through combinations. Some test working memory, some test reaction time, some test mood. Participants range from young athletes to schoolchildren to elderly patients. Pool all that together and you get noise.
The one finding that keeps showing up
Here's the part worth paying attention to, because it's more specific and more useful than the general claim.
A 2024 longitudinal study by Rosinger and colleagues, published in the American Journal of Human Biology, looked at middle-to-older aged community-dwelling adults, using serum osmolality as a biomarker rather than relying on self-reported intake. They tested four separate cognitive domains: inhibition, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and sustained attention.
Dehydration showed an inverse association with sustained attention. It showed no significant relationship with the other three.
That's a much narrower result than "dehydration impairs cognition," and it's more credible precisely because it's narrow. Sustained attention is the ability to keep focus on something over time without drifting. It's the thing that goes when you read the same paragraph three times.
The researchers themselves framed their paper against what they called a popular narrative, and noted the mixed results in the literature. That framing tells you something about how the field views the confident version.
There's some support elsewhere for attention being the sensitive domain. One review noted that attention, psychomotor skills, and immediate memory, along with subjective state, are the capabilities most often implicated, and that healthy young adults are also at some risk when hydration is inadequate, not just vulnerable populations.
What you can reasonably conclude
Being properly hydrated is worth doing. Nobody argues otherwise, and the downside of drinking water is nothing.
But the honest version of the claim is narrower than the marketed one. Sustained attention appears genuinely sensitive to hydration status. The broader claims about memory, decision-making, and executive function are not well established at mild dehydration levels, and several careful studies found nothing.
Also worth noting: thirst itself may be doing some of the work. One study found that thirsty participants performed better on tasks requiring controlled processing, and that reaction time improvements after drinking water were moderated by how thirsty people subjectively felt. The relationship between the sensation and the physiology isn't simple.
What this means for a drink
We sell a hydration product, so it would be convenient to tell you that being slightly dehydrated is destroying your cognitive performance. The research doesn't support that, and we'd rather not build a brand on a claim that a careful reader can dismantle.
What we'll say instead: if the thing you're trying to protect is sustained attention over a long stretch of work, hydration is one of the few inputs with any evidence behind it, and it's the cheapest one available. Water does most of that job. A functional water does it while also delivering L-theanine, which has its own evidence base for relaxed focus, and magnesium glycinate.
The hydration part isn't the reason to drink SÜTHE. It's the baseline. The reason is what's dissolved in it.
